>_< my review for The Host movie...

(this is exactly how i felt after the movie. lol. liz lemon gifs are the best. NERD RAGE!)
i just watched the movie yesterday. after around 1 month of being excited about it, i was extremely, completely, utterly disappointed. was i really stupid for expecting more from the movie? i mean, the book is great!! =(
What upset me the most was that I love Ian x Wanda, but they barely developed their relationship at all. Nothing much happened between them, and then one day they're suddenly in love. what the hell?? at least they had more scenes together. jared and wanda barely interacted. just a bunch of jared x melanie kisses from flashbacks.
i wrote a review at The Host's yahoo movies page, and i gave it 2 out of 5 stars (the average, 3.5 stars, is too generous!). this is what i wrote:

As a fan of the book, I knew coming in that I would probably be disappointed in the movie, especially after hearing about all the bad reviews. But I was still shocked at how bad the movie was! Everything happened too fast, they left out important parts, added some pointless scenes, there was no real character development, and they oversimplified things.
The best part about the book was Ian and Wanda's love story, but they barely developed their relationship at all in the movie. But even though he didn't have much screen time, I enjoyed the Ian parts. Jake Abel did a great job. Actually, they are all great actors. It's such a shame that their talents are wasted in this terrible movie.
They should have just focused on the 3 (4) main characters and their love triangle (rectangle). Just make a good romantic movie instead of making a rushed romance/sci-fi/action movie that no one will be happy with.
-it really felt like they had a checklist of scenes they wanted to include, and they just quickly squished in everything. it felt so rushed and jumpy, it didn't flow well.
-a lot of parts were even more corny than even the book, though I guess the aliens being too nice was hard 2 take seriously...
-but the Ian parts were pretty good, i guess. jake tried his best...even though he didn't have much scenes, he managed to put so much genuine emotions into those moments
-the fake caves were not so impressive. they should have made things a little darker or digitally changed them or something, so they wouldn't look so obviously fake
-there was a closeup shot of wanda/melanie moving around in bed while dreaming that was awkward and unnecessary. but i love that shiny, silver nightie that she was wearing!! i want one!! xD

the movie just felt like a very short, poor outline of the book. i was truly surprised how terrible it was, even though i knew a lot of people were saying that it's bad. i guess it's partly because i read most of the book before watching, that i was more disappointed than someone who knew nothing about it, but even those people hated it. sighhhhhh.
the only good thing about the movie being so awful and totally bombing at the box office (6TH PLACE FOR ITS 1ST WEEKEND) is that it probably means there will be no movie sequel. which is something i do not want, because a certain actress (she looked so weird and creepy in this movie and her acting is just ok!! WHY DID THEY PICK HER??!!) will be in the sequel, playing a very important character.
i really hate this actress, so i do not want a sequel unless they replace her with someone else. even though i'd love to see jake as ian again (and saoirse as melanie, max as jared), but she would just totally ruin the movie for me!! she already ruined the ending of this movie for me (though i have to admit, the ending was kind of stupid. maybe it's better in the book).

Date: 2013-04-08 05:59 pm (UTC)yeah, i think fans of the book would want to see the movie, right? but it's too bad the movie did really badly at the box office in america and also worldwide. sigh....

Date: 2013-04-09 04:27 am (UTC)Yeah, it's always like that, isn't it? If you've read the book you want to see the movie. Then you get disappointed most of the time because a lot of what you liked from the book isn't in the movie.
Hmm.. wonder why. Could have to do with the Twilight hype, or something else. It's just really too bad, since the book is so well written.

Date: 2013-04-10 11:59 pm (UTC)hmm...i guess part of it is that people are sick of twilight and twilight-like movies? the actors are not popular and not especially good-looking? lol. and the movie got a lot of bad reviews, too. yes, it's too bad. but at least the book has been selling well on amazon recently. i think it was in 2nd place, even. hopefully the movie gets more people curious and they'll go read the book.

Date: 2013-04-11 07:56 am (UTC)Though I didn't find out about Cloud Atlas or One Day until the first news about movie makingsof them (the early stage, so before the news went out to the masses). I guess I shouldn't say much then, right?
Yeah, that's probably right, since Twilight isn't the only one either. We got Beautiful Creatures, True Blood, Vampire Diaries, etc.
Haha, not good looking, maybe I shouldn't watch this movie.. =P
However, I don't think a lot of people now days go to the cinema to watch a movie because of a specific actor/actress like in the 90's. Now people rather look at the producer or the plot. Yes of course if they like someone they'll obvoiusly go watch their movies, but..
That's great! I'm glad the movie gives the book a push.
Let's hope so =)
And Stephenie Meyer might not be: That Twilight-woman..

Date: 2013-04-12 01:53 am (UTC)yes! i think people have just had enough of cheesy supernatural love stories. haha. well, i think max irons (jared) and jake abel (ian) are both handsome guys, but saoirse ronan (melanie/wanda) looks just ok. i guess that's true, but in this case, a lot of people might avoid this movie because of stephenie meyer, because they assume it's just like twilight or something.
yeah...i hope the sequel to The Host book will be popular. i'll definitely read it!

Date: 2013-04-12 04:45 am (UTC)How refreshing! A non-Twilight fan who doesn't have to bad-mouth it all the time =)
No, everyone has their own taste, mine is unfortunately to like most movies and series in this world (even the really weird ones that no one else likes..).
It's dandegous going to the Theatres, I always come out wanting to watch at least two new movies ^^,
Ah, I see.
You're probably right. All these prejudice of the world..
There's going to be a sequel?
Haha, I just realised I'm all turned around.. I knew of 'The Host' before I knew of 'Twilight'.. Basically I read 'Twilight' because of 'The Host'. Hoping for a sequel, but don't belive there'll be one.

Date: 2013-04-12 08:04 pm (UTC)really? xD actually, i rarely go watch movies! partly because i have sensitive ears and a lot of movies are too loud for me. partly 'cause i'm really picky and movies these days are just not that great. lol.
so, i was really lucky that i happened to see the trailer for The Host last month!! i mean, i would have still seen the TV spots even if i didn't see the trailer at the theater, but those are so short and i think i probably wouldn't be interested enough to look it up. and part of the reason the trailer stuck in my mind was that they used a song i loved, Radioactive (Imagine Dragons). so the whole thing is just like fate or something!! haha...
oh...you read twilight because of the host, instead of the other way around. interesting! xD i don't think there will be another twilight book, but stephenie meyer said in a lot of different interviews, that she is writing the sequel for The Host and there might even be a 3rd book. ~___~
i have no idea when she'll be finished with the 2nd book and i wonder if the movie doing so badly will affect the release date of the book... but i'm looking forward to the 2nd book, and meanwhile, i'll finish reading the 1st book and read fanfics while i wait!! ^_^ some of these ian/wanda fanfics are so well-written!!

Date: 2013-04-27 03:10 pm (UTC)But yeah, Twilight is probably always going to be a love or hate subject.
Yeah, since I like most things (dramas, series, movies, musicals, theaters , etc.) going to the Theatre will always get me a few new movies I want to see. Now days I've been disappointed most of the times with the movies though. Seems like the movies aren't holding the same standard as a few years ago. Going down hill with small diamonds along the way which holds up my interest.
Ah, that's a problem, I usually comes out with ringing in my ears (recently came to the same conclusion, my ears are pretty sensitive).
Haha, that's amazing! But those are usually the best ones. The once you find by chance because of a string of events. One of my favourite Christmas movies I found because it was referenced in an episode of NCIS years ago. ^^,
Haha, yeah I'm weird (in a lot of ways..) =P
Oh, that's so much fun! And good news! I'm not really updated in what's happening, so thank you! Hope it's as good as the first one.
hmm.. might be. If it were doing really good and she was finished it'd probably have been released about now. But I guess we can only wait and see.
Haha, have fun!
I'll tell you what I think when I've watched the movie..

Date: 2013-04-28 06:26 pm (UTC)yes, i totally agree! why are movies getting worse and worse? it's like they just don't try that hard anymore, to write good stories. it's mostly just action movies with too much CGI and explosions, or stupid comedies or boring romances. *yawn*
that's true! =)
i think i'm kinda weird too. haha.
yeah...i wonder if it won't be until next year that she'll release it. hmm. i still haven't finished reading the book. lol. sure, it'll be fun to discuss the movie with you. hehe.

Date: 2013-04-29 05:03 pm (UTC)I have no idea. The newley graduated scripwriters and producers/directors are all great and have awesome ideas.. But it's like when they show the finnished product it's lost all it's originallity.. And I just can't understand why. Must be some highly praised person behind the scenes killing all the good parts or something.
Haha, that's good! We shoud all be uniqe in or own way.
Oh, you're probably right. I think they'll wait until the movie dies down a bit and then release it, provided she's done of course ^^,
Haha, hopefully! I'm gonna do my best, good luck on the book.
