Author Behind ABC’s Asian American Sitcom “Fresh Off The Boat” Will Not Apologize For Its Title
so there's this new tv show where the main cast are all asians. for those of you that don't know, the last time that happened was in 1994, with All-American Girl. but that show was about americanized koreans, and i think it wasn't that funny, so of course, it failed and only lasted a year. so this is kind of a big deal, a tv show about mostly asians, in the united states.
well, okay, i think the trailer is kind of funny. though i just know there are going to be a ton of "funny" asian stereotypes thrown in there. i already see some in the trailer. and they have weird fake accents. i have mixed feelings about this. on the one hand, it is cool that there's a tv show about an asian family, an asian kid growing up in the 90s in america, which i was, so it will be nostalgic and might be fun to watch.
but asians haven't been in american tv shows or movies that much, and most of the time when they are, they have stereotypical roles. like the quiet ones, the smart ones, or the ones who know martial arts. i don't think america is ready for a show with an all-asian cast until asians show up in american tv shows and movies a lot more, and where their asian-ness is not a big focus and not a big deal. imean, it's still tough for all african-americans cast shows to survive, and they've been in the media much much more than asians have. george lopez's sitcom (from 2002-2007) was the first real tv show with a cast full of hispanics, and it was quite successful. it did have a lot of stereotypes and wasn't perfect, but it didn't feel like it was all about their race, i guess? i mean, they just seem like a regular middle-class american family that happen to be mexican. and the writing was smart and it was just quite funny and you can relate to it. i think it really helped that george lopez was a popular comedian and sandra bullock produced it, though. i'm sure a lot more people were wiling to invest in that show than in this show about asians.
the main problem i have with this show is the title. if you don't know what it means, wikipedia defines it as "The phrases Fresh off the boat (FOB), Off the boat (OTB), Freshy, or just simply Boat; are terminologies used to describe immigrants that have arrived from a foreign nation and have not yet assimilated into the host nation's culture, language, and behaviour.[1] Within some ethnic Asian circles in the United States, the phrase is considered politically incorrect and derogatory. It can also be used to describe the stereotypical behavior of new immigrants"
"fresh off the boat", at least the way kids used it when i was in school, was always a negative term. i don't understand people saying in comments how it can be used in a positive way. i guess maybe some people do, but i would think mostly, it's a way to put someone down, like...they're so stupid or don't understand or they're kind of weird, because they're "fresh off the boat", or a "fob". omg, i hated hearing "fob" so much. even though no one called me that, because i was born here. but asians calling other asians "fob" to make them feel bad is terrible. it's just very rude and mean. (i don't remember any non-asians using that word. just us asians using it on each other.) well, that was back in the 90s, at least. i'm not sure if the word "fresh off the boat" or "fob" now is any less offensive. maybe it is. but seems like the majority of comments are saying it's used as more of an insult than a compliment.
i don't think we should support something blindly, just because there are asians in it. i hate how i see a lot of asians on twitter saying they like it just because there are asians on tv now. seriously? ok, i've spent way too much time thinking about this. lol. i just think that it would be much better if they change the title. but because of this controversial title, they're getting a lot of attention, so maybe that was part of their plan anyway. lol.
i will try watching this show, i suppose. but i really don't expect it to last long. it reminds me of Everybody Hates Chris, except not as funny and quirky. but it has been 20 FREAKING YEARS since the last time an asian family sitcom made it on to american tv, so i guess this is quite an accomplishment. i just wish they had a better storyline, because with this kind of ok-looking cast and ok-acting and ok-storyline, i don't think much people will be interested in watching it. not even asians.
